Before you start
Installing QuickBooks Desktop 2024 is straightforward, and this guide walks you through it from download to activation. Before you begin, have two things ready: your license number and product number (these arrive with your purchase), and a computer that meets the basic requirements.

Step 1 — Download the installer
Download the QuickBooks Desktop 2024 installer for your edition. Save the file somewhere easy to find, like your Downloads folder. Close other programs so the installer can run cleanly.
Step 2 — Run the installer
Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen prompts. You'll be asked to accept the license agreement, choose an install type (the standard/express option is right for most people), and pick an install location. Let the installer finish — it may take a few minutes.
Step 3 — Enter your license and product numbers
When prompted, type in the license number and product number exactly as they appear in your order details. Double-check for easy mix-ups like the number 0 versus the letter O. This is the step that ties your copy of QuickBooks to your license.
Step 4 — Activate
After installation, open QuickBooks and complete activation. In most cases activation happens automatically the first time you open the program while connected to the internet. If you're prompted manually, follow Help → Activate QuickBooks and confirm your details.
That's it — once activation succeeds, QuickBooks Desktop 2024 is ready to use.
Common activation problems (and quick fixes)
- "Invalid license number." Re-enter the numbers carefully; confirm you're using the codes for the exact edition you installed (for example, Pro Plus codes won't activate Enterprise).
- Activation won't complete online. Check your internet connection and any firewall or antivirus that might block QuickBooks, then try again.
